Many I know would rather do deadlifts than dig into the trauma of a painful past. We who actively do so call it “gym therapy”. Here’s the deal — that’s a better outlet for your pain, anger, and resentment than violence, drugs, and the myriad of other things you could be doing, I see you and respect you— But bitter roots will still yield rotten fruits in your life until you dig down and deal with them. Festering wounds won’t heal until you open em up and clean em out. Don’t seek to cope. Seek to heal. It’s more difficult in the moment, but it’s worth it. Start sooner rather than later. Trauma can affect your cardiovascular health, immune function, cognitive processing, and more for a lifetime. Don’t let the callouses grow so thick that you can’t get down deep. Don’t know where to start? I didn’t either and I didn’t trust therapists to help much (for better or worse). Personally, I found Dr. Pennebaker’s research as outlined in “Opening Up By Writing It Down” a useful starting point. And through my work on myself, I’ve been able to help others begin their healing journeys through the "Trauma And Your Health" seminar here in Better Daily Premium.
